“Desperation Mustache”

“Desperation Mustache” – May 2020

The story of a boy and his mustache.

This song is part two of our unofficial “Songs For The Quarantimes” series, several songs inspired by/related to the coronavirus pandemic. Desperate times call for desperate measures, as they say, and boy are these times desperate. But unlike the facial hair that this song is based on, “Desperation Mustache” will really grow on you.

Lyrically inspired by Ben’s very real, very sad mustache, this rock song draws musical inspiration from a number of sources: “What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?” by R.E.M., The Dirty Projectors, and Neil Young + Crazy Horse.

Lyrics:

There is so much out of my control these days
I think I’m gonna cry
I want something big to come along and change my ways
But I don’t want to try

Staring through the mirror at my face
My barren upper lip will be the place
(I’m gonna grow a)

Desperation mustache
Desperation mustache
Desperation mustache

Pencil thin, a waxéd spin, handles down to my chin
It’s unequivocal
No follicle of doubt will sprout, oh it draws you in
It’s so individual

I’m not one to panic or be rash
But it’s too late, my razor’s in the trash
(I’m gonna grow a)

Desperation mustache
Desperation mustache
Desperation mustache

My desperation mustache will grow all by itself
My desperation mustache will make me somebody else
Oh it doesn’t seem so weird
After the mustache I think I’ll grow a beard

Weeks go by, dream slowly dies, I wonder if I’m cursed
I think I’m gonna cry
Patchy, scratchy, tacky, terse, oh it’s so much worse
But look how hard I tried

Staring through the mirror at my face
Why can’t something better take its place?
(I’m gonna grow a)
