The story of a boy and his bespoke bread baking business.
Early in the year, everyone went crazy making sourdough bread because, let’s be honest, what else could you do? Initially we laughed at all the amateur bakers popping up on the socials, but Ben – a brewer of beer – couldn’t resist the call of a new fermentation project forever. This song was recorded before his first bake, but he’s kept his starter culture going ever since and has baked every few weeks since July. What a loser.
A classic These Stains love song, “Sourdough” tells the story of a relationship gone sour due to a yeast-related obsession. It is rendered as a tearful ballad, complete with string arrangement, that one-ups our earlier song, “My Dog Ran Away.” Luckily Ben’s real life relationship did not collapse as a result of his sourdough obsession; he and his partner both really love bread, and each other.
Lyrics:
I was spending all my time with you
So I went looking for something new
Just wanted to keep it fresh
But I put our love to the test
It started off real slow
’Til my starter started to grow
I fed it flour every day
While your flower wilt’d and withered away
There you go, so sour, though
You love me so, my sourdough
My hobby left you feeling cold
But I had dough to slap and fold
You asked if I had something to prove
In fact I did have something to prove
Your temper was getting hot
As I pulled out the cast iron pot
You shouted “have I made a mistake?”
I couldn’t hear you as I watched it bake
There you go, so sour, though
You love me so, my sourdough
My sourdough, my sourdough, etc.
I know you have needs I’m neglecting,
While I’m kneading this bread it’s not helping
One final plea to the golden crust
But you’re fed up, our love has turned to dust
So you left me all alone
A king on my gluten throne
My rule came to bitter end
When I had to eat my only friend
There you go, so sour, though
You love me so, my sourdough
My sourdough, my sourdough, etc.
